Lando Norris edged out fellow driver and championship contender the Australian for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who took the championship lead from his teammate by one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, topped the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Until that point, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before the sprint shootout due at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the other racer in the championship fight, lying 36 points Norris, was classified in P17 as his team opted for a unique setup. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to crash, though minor, when he spun at the fourth corner soon after starting. Tsunoda lost control over the exit kerbs before spinning across the gravel trap, and was blessed to avoid just a slight brush of the fence. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also spun, at the conclusion of the session, spinning around through the quick descending Mergulho turn before the last turn on to the main straight. Hamilton ended the session in P19, trailing teammate Charles Leclerc. Norris and Piastri were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with the German's car in third, 0.619secs behind Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
