An Historic Moment as Liam Rosenior Transcends Barriers

"Liam Rosenior is an excellent tactician who knows the game inside out, and that's the crucial factor.

"But, in my role as the Blues' first black player, I would be lying to claim this moment does not affect me."

These were the sentiments of the former Chelsea winger, the man who earned his historic debut for the Blues' first team off the bench in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, the club hired Strasbourg manager Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next manager following the exit of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also owns Chelsea.

Statistics show only twelve black head coaches – excluding individuals in temporary caretaker positions – in the Premier League since it began thirty-four in the past.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and developed his game locally, he understands this area," continued Canoville.

"When kids see someone like Liam managing the team they support, someone who looks like them, from a similar background, from a household that champions what's right… it is impactful and shows them that opportunities exist.

"So yes, it is a massive moment for Chelsea, for the capital, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, provide him with the necessary tools, and allow him to do his work."

What Exactly Does the Data Show?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became Chelsea manager back in the nineties thereby becoming the Premier League's inaugural black head coach.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first English black manager in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present Premier League gaffer of colour.

The lack of managers of colour across the English game is matched by a lack of diversity in the boardroom.

As per the Black Footballers Partnership 2023 report, 43% of Premier League players are from African or Caribbean heritage.

Yet, analysis by the equality organization found just 3.2% of board and senior leadership management teams at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic communities.

At senior coaching level, according to data provided by eleven clubs, the figure is two percent.

Across all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from the same 11 clubs, the figure is just five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history by virtue of his appointment as a the Chelsea manager, and we hope to witness more such appointments," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists a wealth of ability present in the ethnic minority groups... aspiring coaches want the opportunity to show their capabilities. We need to persist in striving to break those obstacles once and for all."

Furthermore, the new appointee is set to become one of only four full-time British managers presently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which lags behind the continent's remaining big five leagues regarding national managers.

Sixteen out of twenty top-flight coaches in Serie A are Italian, 11 in La Liga in Spain, 12 in the Bundesliga are German and 10 of the 18 are French.

Current Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure every aspiring British managers with a youth development pedigree will be, in some way regardless of allegiance, supporting Liam.

"It's truly motivating for up-and-coming British coaches in the system to see an individual get such a role with that profile and we hope he does highly successful."

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as Fulham, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career culminating in a five-month stint in charge of the third-tier club Brentford back in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded an MBE in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered to tackling inequality in football and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he followed his father's footsteps. He began writing a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the under-representation of black coaches. He highlighted that ethnicity does not determine coaching skill and said opportunities must be awarded based on qualification.

He further expressed a point he would repeat: how vast under-representation results in misunderstandings of players with diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

During an interview for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" and "emotional", but said he could relate to the Netherlands international with Nigerian parentage. Emegha is set to follow him in moving from Strasbourg to West London in July.

In subsequent Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted to being "ashamed" to hear a staff member make a discriminatory remark. He vowed his support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and authored an open letter to Donald Trump while he was in office, accusing him of "overt" prejudice.

He has subsequently made his name as a manager – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their time together at Derby County.

Rosenior said goodbye to his former club on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal with the Blues.

Chelsea boasted the top flight's first African heritage manager in Gullit and the first black captain in Paul Elliott.
